In our garden the fruit stand out,

Every year as late as autumn,

One apple wrinkles up, like an old face,

Wobbling,

With the wind harrying them about,

Beating them like hail on the windows.

And when I lie down at dawn

Staying in the uncushioned bed of my sisters

who have wandered away errant,

I hear flocks of crows alighting to grass underfoot.

I give a raucous opening on the windows

Let the bleakness be heard

Someone lives in here still

The birds lift up with a cry

And father from the fourth room,

Hoy, who’s there?

It runs to me through the emptiness with echoing voices

When I come traveling ahome

Neighbors stand in a circle all around me,

Weighing me like old balance scales in their heads,

And there’s not one who can bring me a greeting

I clam up against them

I twist and spin around in the market

Like a lost lamb

A day or two,

Then I pull a veil around my hat

Dawn brings to me an incidental coach, swinging away

Dad remains like a stone implanted in the porch

And a grey dew lies through his hair.

Oh gray land, cloudless sky land

You’re here in a plain bosom of brown sand

I was torn as a kid by the old familiar fence

The dry pitcher of thorns (?)

And on a slim thread strung into a wreath,

wild peas

that grow in khoshech on the earth.

Oh gray land with dull chattering from the gloomy gentiles

You’re here on hard soil

By bumpy roads

I drank, I drank and I lifted

Like a waterleaf

That reaches, reaches, until it’s up,

Away from marshy mother’s bosom away

To bare earth,

To naked sun,

To distant void,

Familiar swaddled ones toddled after me

The footsies of a rabbit that strayed in the rye

The branchlets of an old barren tree

The bypath on the flat fields (?)

And our grayed and yellowed sky.

Oh gray land, when the southerly sun has painted me with lovely colors,

and when my neck is brown like Lithuanian clay -

I have heard

the sobbing wind that sweeps to a climax

from your willows.

Oh gray land!

In crooked squares between two humble hamlets

Where the railroad used to run through not far behind

Its approaching cry was loved, was loved (?)

I used to wait shivering

Which came on from there,

Which went out somewhere

And now, when my bones are already stiff

And I’ve already spent a spring in every land

To brown flats

in a low lap,

I walk on through

I shrug off the pollen from my clothes

Black rims have etched into their body around their nails

All the impoverished wives who scour scorched pots

I also already have yellowed fingers

That carry a bony basket (?)

And eyes empty like a shaken out bag.

At dawn I meet milk carriers,

with silver cans

that drag their shoulders down and down

And one of them carries the heavy load past me

Like silent unyielding iron (?)

the weight bears their head to the ground.

I also already have yellowed fingers

That carry a bony basket.

In Tammuz a leaf falls down from a tree,

and an unhappiness comes to carefree times,

and brings a leanness to the body.

As for me, the unhappiness took me by the hand early

like inmates together chained(?) on a long path.

My feet drag slowly,

like unpaid laborers

dreary and tired.

In my dreaming nights

I am in a dark house

among wives exhausted and fallen to the ground

And their hands are very good familiar hands,

with nails notched from years of drudgery.

I catch myself with a numbed heart,

and my feet drag slowly,

like unpaid laborers, dreary and tired.
