Poor wives

אָרימע ווייבּער

קומען אָרימע ווייבּער אין וואַלד אַריין

Poor wives go into the forest

to pick pinecones in a bag

Words

remain above the moss

that gaze to heaven

With yawns from black pots

and hungry mouths

The trees remain standing, disheveled

like wet hens

when a cold, driving rain is falling

Chubby shopkeep in the store

weighs flour.

The crow on the church steeple

gulps cloud after cloud (?)

A leaf arrives from the road

He arrives with blue eyes

The apple lies in the cellar

The chestnut tree

rustles and rustles

with the last leaves

by my window.

How many wives had Tobtshe’s father had

somewhere in the world? (?)

Tobtshe’s little hands got frozen

early

in September.

She runs, she runs with dry feet in school

The wind runs with dry feet

after her

Its nose leaks (?)

It leaks

The houses are brick

The panes are glass

Trees stand firm and bare

on the paths

Snow will come,

to blanket the orphanage,

the roof, the doorstep

Doors thrown across the windows(?)

—-

Tobtshe sleeps in a little bed with shadows under her eyes

Her little shoes by the bed

Her little dress on the bench

Her gray frozen dress

The panes are full of moonlight

I wander from house to house

and go slowly to the doors.

The kids are afraid,

the kids in the orphanage.

They run after me with slender little hands

after my dress

after my braid

And I,

I will open the windows

Childish heads

will shiver

and then again will be

still.

My sister

מיין שוועסטער

My sister

My sister is ten years older than me.

The gardens by her window pray

to the wind:

Has the cherry tree already bloomed?

My sister brings home from the market

fish and fleish,

And she takes out the eyes from the fish,

She taps the fat on the meat with a finger,

My sister with the sharp grin.

And when behind the chimneys, behind the roofs

The sun sets

On the walls,

On the floor

A strange and golden gleam(?)

It’s quenched, it goes out

My sister

spins her face around.

Her eyes are dark, like beer.

The red ribbons in her daughter’s hair

bloom in the night,

like wild mushrooms

toadstools -

She grabs, my sister grabs

a cloth on her shoulder,

She bolts the windows

And jams the door

October

It’s happening soon

The cat will lie around

Around the old neck

of the willow

and suck the last little blood.

It’s happening soon

The cat’s eyes

are green.

And

a couple yellow

leaves

still hang

on the tree.

Daffodils wilting

And leaves meet in strange doors

And measure out gray bags

with empty eyes

like hollowed out bread.

And leaves meet in strange doors

And lay across the doorsteps

A bit of gray pollen

Daffodils wilting

Where are horses going

with closed eyes?

A woman, pregnant, walks slowly through the street

The sun is doused

behind an unfinished house

The sun is doused

behind an unfinished house

Daffodils wilting

My braid drags heavily

to the ground
